USA Wrestling announces which rules and bracketing system will be used at each of its 2005 national and regional events

USA Wrestling has announced to its membership the exact rules and bracketing systems that will be used at each of its 2005 national and regional events.

In 2004, FILA, the international wrestling federation, changed the rules of international wrestling dramatically. Among the key rule changes in the new rules which are used in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling were:

  • A match will consist of three, two-minute periods. A wrestler must win two periods to win the match. The total score of all three periods does not matter. Each period starts with a 0-0 score.
  • If a wrestler wins the first two periods, the match is over at the conclusion of the second period.
  • If a wrestler scores six more points than his/her opponent in a period, that is considered a technical superiority for that period, and the period ends when the six point lead occurs.
  • Any period that ends with a 0-0 score goes to the clinch.
  • If a wrestler scores a five-point throw, he/she automatically wins that period.
  • If a wrestler scores two three-point holds in one period, he/she automatically wins that period.

In the summer of 2004, USA Wrestling’s state leaders voted NOT to change to the new FILA wrestling rules for the 2005 age-group season. This means that matches will still be two periods in length, and the total score of the match will determine the winner, just as in past years

However, for age-group events which are qualifiers for an international competition, USA Wrestling will use the new FILA rules. This is to allow athletes to qualify for U.S. teams within the rules that they will use at the international events.

This has led to some confusion among USA Wrestling athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers. In order to clarify this situation, USA Wrestling has posted a list of rules and bracketing that will be in place at each event.
