Washington State Wrestling Association

Cadet and Junior National Dual Teams qualification criteria

The Washington State Wrestling Association (WSWA) has had three great years at the Junior National Duals and this past year participated for the first time in the Cadet National Duals.  It is now time for us as an organization to take it one step further.  The WSWA has now determined the qualification criteria for these two teams.

The process for qualifying and selecting the Cadet Dual and Junior Dual teams for Washington has been formed.

The two Dual Teams will now go through a qualification process.  In order for you to be considered to one of the spots on the team you must qualify based on the criteria below.  If you have met that criteria, you will be allowed to participate at a qualifying tournament as long as you have completed the correct application and submitted the proper fees.  The qualifying tournament(s) will be held at the end of the regular WSWA season. The location/Time/Date will be announced and sent out to all chartered WSWA clubs.

The Cadet Dual team will consist of 25 individuals who will be considered based on both Freestyle and Greco Roman abilities.  There may be a few more individuals selected to ONLY participate in Freestyle or ONLY participate in Greco Roman as necessary.  There are 17 Cadet weight classes so be aware that NOT all of them will have 2 spots.

The Junior Dual team will consist of 23 individuals who will be considered based on both Freestyle and Greco Roman abilities.  There may be a few more individuals selected to ONLY participate in Freestyle or ONLY participate in Greco Roman as necessary.  There are 15 Junior weight classes so be aware that NOT all of them will have 2 spots.

It is recommended that Cadets qualify for the cadet team and Juniors qualify with the junior team because of the grueling grind put on the athlete.  But, the WSWA will allow any athlete to participate in both age groups as long as they meet the age group requirements set by USA Wrestling and are able to pay all required fees.

To be able to compete at the qualifying tournament, you MUST have competed in one of the events below and placed according to the following criteria.  A seeding process will be followed.

Tri-State – Top 6

Pacific Coast Championships – Top 6

WIAA High School Mat Classic - Top 8

Northwest Regionals - Battleground - Top 3 – either style

Cadet & Junior Freestyle State - Top 6

Cadet & Junior Greco State - Top 6

West Junior Regionals - Las Vegas – Top 3 - either style

** For the purposes of the WSWA being able to purchase tickets, hotel, uniforms and plan the trip in the most cost effective means, Kids/Cadet Western Regionals will NOT be on the list of criteria.

The weight you apply for and participate in at the qualifying tournament will be the weight you MUST maintain for all weigh ins at the Dual team tournament.

To participate in the qualifying tournament, you must submit an application to the State Chairman, Chuck Bullard, at P.O. Box 1041, Poulsbo, WA. 98370-0047 2 weeks prior to the qualifying tournament.  Applications will be available on the Washington State Wrestling web site: http://www.WashingtonStateWrestling.com as soon as possible.  They will also be mailed out to all chartered WSWA clubs.

You also MUST submit with your application, at least ½ of the cost of the Dual team trip.  This cost will be provided as more details are known.  Be prepared to have as much as $500.00 to participate in the qualifying tournament.  This will be reimbursed to you if you do not qualify for the trip within 1 week of the qualifying tournament.

The remaining cost of the trip MUST be sent in by the due date (date will be announced) or the spot will be opened up to the next qualifier.

Dual team members will be notified via phone calls within 1 week of the qualifying tournament.  As soon as the team is fully known, the team will be published on the WSWA web site.

Staff for these trips will consist of:

*State Chairman

most states have made it policy that this event is attended by and presented by their chairman.

*Age Group Director

Cadet or Junior Director as applicable

*One or two coaches selected as needed

Selection for this is from COMPLETE applications submitted through WSWA national team application process (located on WSWA web site).

*Medical Dr. or Physical Therapist when possible

*The team will also consist of Mat and/or Pairing officials if possible.

It is standard policy with USA Wrestling that when states attends national events, that they provide officials.
